Two standardized active compounds
Eyevistar® is a natural marigold-derived extract standardized to contain 20% lutein and 4% zeaxanthin, two xanthophyll carotenoids that accumulate selectively in the macula.
Xanthophyll carotenoids with complementary protective roles
Lutein and zeaxanthin perform two closely related protective functions within the eye. They help filter high-energy blue light before it reaches sensitive photoreceptor cells and help neutralize reactive oxygen species associated with oxidative damage. Since the human body cannot synthesize these carotenoids, they must be obtained through dietary or supplemental sources.
Marigold flowers, botanically identified as Tagetes erecta L., are an abundant commercial source of lutein and zeaxanthin. Eyevistar® brings these two carotenoids together in a defined and standardized composition intended for eye-health formulations.
Lutein
Contributes to macular pigment, supports blue-light filtration and helps protect retinal cells against oxidative stress.
In the in-vivo study, LC-MS/MS analysis demonstrated dose-dependent restoration of lutein in both plasma and macular tissue, with the highest concentrations observed in animals receiving 10 mg/kg of Eyevistar®.
Zeaxanthin
Contributes to macular pigment and supports protection against light-induced and oxidative retinal stress.
Zeaxanthin was quantified in plasma and macular tissue through LC-MS/MS. In the high-fat-diet model it was depleted under oxidative stress and restored most clearly at the highest Eyevistar® treatment level.
Why a dual-carotenoid standardization matters
Eyevistar® is standardized around two naturally associated macular carotenoids rather than a single active compound. Lutein and zeaxanthin both contribute to macular pigment and share complementary roles in light filtration and antioxidant protection.
This composition was evaluated as a complete Eyevistar® formulation in retinal pigment epithelial cells and in a high-fat-diet-induced animal model. The research showed enhanced ARPE-19 cell proliferation, protection against UV-A-induced cellular damage and reductions in A2E and lipofuscin accumulation.
Standardization and analytical evaluation
| Parameter | Eyevistar® specification |
|---|---|
| Lutein | 20% |
| Zeaxanthin | 4% |
| Botanical source | Marigold, Tagetes erecta L. |
| Active-compound class | Xanthophyll carotenoids |
| Research bioanalytical method | LC-MS/MS |
The Eyevistar® study used LC-MS/MS to quantify lutein and zeaxanthin in plasma and macular tissue. The reported calibration concentrations were 5, 10, 25, 100 and 250 ng/mL, with a stated limit of detection of 2 ng/mL and limit of quantification of 5 ng/mL.
